"Elfquest," the cult comic by Wendy and Richard Pini, is heading to the big screen courtesy of Warners Bros. and Rawson Thurber.

Thurber will write, direct and produce the feature, whose format is undetermined.

The original comic, which the Pinis initially self-published starting in 1978, followed a tribe of elves known as the Wolfriders in their attempts to survive and link with other dispersed elves on an Earth-like planet with two moons while on the lookout for tribes of humans and trolls, both of which acted as allies and enemies.

The series -- which at certain points in its history was published by both Marvel and DC Comics -- attracted a more mature audience as it went along, with scenes of battles and sexuality that were intense for that time.

Hollywood has long tried to adapt the series, and several attempts at an animated series or feature have been made over the years.

Courtenay Valenti is overseeing for Warners.

CAA-repped Thurber, a commercials director, broke through into features with the 2004 Ben Stiller hit "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story." He also wrote and directed "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh," an adaptation of the Michael Chabon novel.

The Pinis are repped by RWSH and Hansen Literary.

You know, I hate movie studios that make movies that I really want to see and put them out in a "limited release".

Ironically enough, I'm not referring to a Ghibli film either.

There are currently two films out there right now that I want to see, but can't cause they're not playing here.

Movie #1: Good Night, And Good Luck:

It's a coolie old period piece with David Strathairn, George Clooney, Jeff Daniels, Patricia Clarkson and Robert Downey Jr. about the beginning of TV journalism. It's a black and white film about the CBS News crews led by Edward R. Murrow and the CBS News investigation of Senator Joseph McCarthy and his "House Un-American Activities Committee". I love movies like this. Kinda like a pseudo-documentary, but with real actors. And it has a killer jazz soundtrack. I love jazz music.

Granted, this is supposedly coming to Kansas City on the 21st, but I hate waiting.

Movie #2: MirrorMask:

MirrorMask is a unique piece of fantasy from the mind of Neil Gaiman and produced by the Jim Henson Company. It's about a girl named Helena who is a circus performer that longs to get out of the circus and find a normal life. Along the way, she dreams herself into a strange and bizarre world where she must find the fabled MirrorMask to save the day. The cast is a bunch of unknowns, but that can be a good thing, especially in a high fantasy piece like this one is.

Unfortunately, this one isn't currently scheduled to appear here at all so far.

Yes, limited release movies really piss me off. It's depressing that coolie films like these get squashed cause the big media moguls think that they won't sell.

Yeah. Spirited Away just made mounds and mounds of cash in Japan, won an Academy Award®, and was one of the best films when it came out... Imagine the money it could have made in a wide release. Heaven forbid that the companies should make money on a good film.

That's my rant for the week. Since I can't see these, I'm going to try to see Serenity tonight. Yeah. Firefly goodness. :)

Hopefully I can stay awake enough to actually live through a 10:45pm showing tonight.

Yeah.
